Dear Karen Bradley MP,  
A new report published by the Women & Equalities Committee has called on the Government to take urgent action to give women access to abortion care in Northern Ireland. As a resident of Northern Ireland I am writing to ask that you, as Northern Ireland Secretary, do not ignore this important cross-party call to action, and that you act without delay to implement the report's recommendations. 
The report has firmly rejected the stance that Westminster cannot intervene, and has instead urged the UK Government to “legislate as a matter of urgency” for reform, and to address the “grave” and “systematic” breaches of women’s rights caused by the ongoing criminalisation of abortion in Northern Ireland.
It is clear that in the absence of the NI Executive, people in Northern Ireland want the UK Government to intervene. Polling from October 2018 <a href="https://www.amnesty.org.uk/press-releases/northern-ireland-abortion-75-uk-public-want-government-change-law-new-polls">shows</a>:
<ul>
<li>66% of Northern Irish adults think that, in the absence of the Assembly, Westminster should act to change the law.</li>
<li>65% of adults in Northern Ireland agree that abortion should not be a crime.</li>
</ul>
Currently in Northern Ireland abortion is unavailable even in cases of rape, incest or fatal foetal anomaly, so women experiencing an unwanted pregnancy must travel overseas to access treatment. Every month, around 28 women make this journey. Those who cannot travel are forced to choose between continuing a pregnancy against their will or using illegal abortion pills purchased online – risking up to life imprisonment.
I urge you to listen to the voices calling for change, and not to ignore this important cross-party report. It is now more than two years since Stormont was sitting. The women of Northern Ireland cannot wait any longer.
